European Commission, Joint Research Centre, 2003. Available online at: http://www-gvm.jrc.it/glc2000/." Technical Notes "Definition:" "Urban and Built-up Area is the amount of territory, in thousands of hectares, that is covered by buildings and other man-made structures." "" "The area of urban and built-up areas is determined by the Global Land Cover (GLC2000) project. The project uses a framework of temporal and spatial patterns of satellite data, in conjunction with ancillary data, to assign a vegetation classification to each pixel. Please see the methodology section below for more on how the vegetative classifications are assigned." "" "Years Covered and Frequency of Update:" "The Global Land Cover 2000 (GLC2000) dataset was released in 2004 and is based on satellite imagery collected in 2000." "" "Methodology:" "The current analysis from the GLC2000 dataset is based on the interpretation of 1-km SPOT4 satellite data from 2000. After the images were collected, a partnership of 21 institutions from around the world worked to classify the imagery based on the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Land Cover Classification System (LCCS). Information about the LCCS is available at http://www.africover.org/LCCS.htm. Their results were tested in the field to ensure accuracy of the classification scheme. More information is available at http://www-gvm.jrc.it/glc2000." "" "The GLC2000 GIS (spatial) data was downloaded by WRI and projected to Interrupted Goode’s Homolosine equal-area projection. Total urban area in 1000ha was then calculated for each country." "" "Data Reliability:" "These calculations should not be compared to the previous calculations for urban and built-up areas for 1992-1993 (GLCCD v.2). Although the methods WRI used to calculate total urban area by country are the same for the two tables, the data from which the calculations were derived are different. The previous analysis from the GLCCD was derived from 1-km Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data spanning a 12-month period (April 1992-March 1993). The current analysis from the GLC2000 dataset was derived from interpretation of 1-km SPOT4 satellite data from 2000. Many differences also exist in the interpretation methodology and classification systems used to derive the datasets." "" "Given the relatively high level of potential for misclassification, the area classified as urban and built-up land should be treated as an estimate rather than an exact interpretation of the earth's surface.
