"Cereals donated by country refers to the amount of cereals designated as food aid transferred from each donor country to all recipient countries on a total-grant basis or on highly concessional terms. Cereals include wheat, barley, maize, rye, oats, millet, sorghum, rice, buckwheat, alpiste/canary seed, fonio, quinoa, triticale, cereals not listed, wheat flour, and the cereal component of blended foods. Data are given in thousand metric tons."

"Data are available from 1970 to 2006. Cereal food aid shipments are reported on a global trade year basis (July/June) and are updated annually."

"Processed and blended cereals are converted into their grain equivalent by applying the conversion factors included in the Rule of Procedures under the 1999 Food Aid Convention to facilitate comparisons between deliveries of different commodities. From 1970/71 to 1990/91, data on food aid shipments were compiled by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) from the information provided by donor countries, and complemented by data provided by the FAO Consultative Sub-Committee on Surplus Disposal, the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Wheat Council, OECD, and other international organizations. From 1990/91 to date, the information on food aid shipments has been provided to FAO exclusively by WFP. Further information on these data can be obtained at: http://faostat.fao.org/."

"Data on shipments and receipts of food aid are governed by established accounting procedures and are generally considered to be reliable. These measurements represent the amount of cereals distributed to recipient countries; they are not a measure of consumption."

"Regional aggregates measure a sum of available country level data. If data is available for less than 85% of countries in a given region, then that regional aggregate is not computed. Donors that have provided food aid at irregular intervals or in very small quantities are not listed individually."
