"Methodology:"
"Estimates of national immunization coverage are based primarily on two sources, administrative data and coverage surveys, collected annually by UNICEF and WHO. Administrative data include national government estimates of vaccinations performed by service providers. These data are reported in the WHO/UNICEF Joint Reporting Form on Vaccine-Preventable Diseases. Immunization coverage estimates are then derived by dividing the number of children immunized by the number of children in the country-specific target population (either the number of births or the number of surviving infants). Coverage surveys are nationally representative household surveys with questions regarding children's vaccination history. Surveys include UNICEF’s Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), and surveys produced by the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). Once data collection is complete, consultations with national authorities and independent surveys provide a means for identifying any reporting inaccuracies and verifying nationally reported estimates."

"UNICEF and WHO carefully consider the data provided by countries in an attempt to distinguish whether the data accurately reflect immunization system performance or whether they are misleading. Official data are weighed against potential biases, and compared with independent surveys and the opinions of local experts to ensure a best estimate of national immunization coverage. UNICEF and WHO consult and collaborate with national authorities, asking them to review and comment on draft estimates of immunization rates."

"Although some countries have several sources of data covering the same period, allowing for data cross-referencing, other countries have many fewer sources, and/or have sources of poor quality from which to derive immunization coverage estimates; comparisons between countries should be made with caution."
