The International Standards Organization (ISO) is comprised of national standards institutes from individual countries; as a group, these organizations have developed a number of voluntary technical standards for business operations."

"The ISO 14001 was designed to provide any type of public or private organization with environmental management systems standards.  Companies adhering to the ISO 14001 implement environmental management systems, conduct environmental audits, and evaluate their environmental performance with guidance from the ISO.  Their products adhere to environmental labeling standards, and waste streams are managed through life cycle assessment of all products. "National standards institutes regulate the issue of ISO 14001 certifications.  The ISO compiles data on all of the countries worldwide with ISO 14001 certification through an annual survey.  "

"Data Reliability"
"A small amount of double counting occurs due to joint assessments of a single company.  ISO attempts to adjust these data wherever possible.  In addition, some underreporting may occur in all countries.  No distinction is made between accredited and non-accredited institutions, and certifications may be for a single site or for multiple sites.   Users should keep in mind that this survey data is only as reliable as the reports of each national institute, and ISO does very little to ensure the accuracy of this data.  In general, the ISO 14001 standards have received some criticism because they do not require corporate reporting. "

"Nonetheless, these data indicate a significant shift toward greater accountability for corporations.   While the ISO standards have their shortfalls, and the number of companies involved is relatively small,  the data do show the increasing importance of environmental standards and mangement practices for corporations across the globe."
