""World Mangrove Atlas"", The International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME), Okinawa, Japan, 1997." Technical Notes "Mangrove trees and shrubs, including ferns and palms, are found along river banks and coastlines in tropical and subtropical countries. Their main characteristic is that they can tolerate salt and brackish water environments. Globally, there are seventy known species of mangroves. Australia and Southeast Asia have the highest number of mangrove species. Spalding et al. (1997) is the first compilation of data on mangrove extent globally, therefore the figures should be used with caution. Original data was compiled by the World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC) from a variety of sources including, governments, mapping agencies, non-governmental organizations, international agencies and scientists. Data are derived from maps and other published sources. All data were incorporated into a Geographic Information System (GIS) and area estimates were calculated from these GIS maps. The year and quality of the data vary from country to country, therefore figures are not strictly comparable between countries. Please refer to the original source for further information on the original data, alternative estimates of extent of mangroves, and collection methodologies."
