Participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of the concepts, challenges, and approaches for planning and implementating restoration initiatives. With emphasis on agricultural and forest landscapes in Latin America, the course will support the capacity building efforts of Initiative 20x20 country members and partners.

Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE) and WRI in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) is organizing a two-week International Course on Landscape Restoration in support to the capacity development activities for Initiative 20x20 country members. This activity is funded by the International Climate Initiative, from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), Project No. 15_III_072_Lateinamerika_A_Initiative 20 by 20.

Land degradation in Latin America is a product of deforestation, unsustainable land uses and other human-related interventions.The land degradation process is causing the loss of biodiversity, ecosystem services and land functionality to produce food for the society. Many countries in the region have expressed their interest in restore large extensions of land using a variety of strategies however to conduct landscape restoration at scale and achieve the sustainability goals of each country, a process to improve local capacities of land owners, government officials and managers is required.

The general objective of the course is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the major challenges, inherent concepts, management perspectives, and methodological approaches that are important for the planning and implementation of the restoration with emphasis on agricultural and forest landscapes in Latin America.

The target audience includes professionals in charge of planning landscape restoration with interest in scaling up knowledge and capacities at national and local level. We expect to receive middle to senior level officials from ministries and agencies in charge of landscape restoration activities, agricultural and forest sector professionals, and private sector and Non-government organizations professionals.

Latinoamérica es una región cuyos enfoques de desarrollo, en particular a partir de los procesos de colonización, se dirigieron a la alteración o decidida eliminación de los ecosistemas naturales que originalmente cubrían grandes extensiones del continente, con fines de desarrollar asentamientos humanos, establecer sistemas de producción agrícola y pecuaria, implementar explotaciones mineras y otras actividades humanas. Es así como importantes extensiones de bosques tropicales, subtropicales y templados, páramos, manglares y otros sistemas naturales, cedieron espacio a la ganadería, diversas formas de producción agrícola, poblados, ciudades y minas.

El objetivo general del curso es desarrollar una comprensión integral de los principales retos, conceptos inherentes, ámbitos de gestión y abordajes metodológicos, importantes para la planificación y la ejecución de procesos de restauración ecológica y productiva a escala territorial, con énfasis en condiciones rurales, agropecuarias y forestales.

El curso está dirigido a profesionales que estén ocupando puestos relacionados a la planificación de actividades de restauración del paisaje y que tengan interés en participar o estén en condiciones de incidir en la dirección, coordinación y facilitación de procesos de restauración de ecosistemas a gran escala, en regiones, territorios o paisajes; en particular en aquellas zonas rurales con diversidad de usos de la tierra y actores involucrados. Se esperan participantes tanto del sector público, como de organizaciones no gubernamentales y del sector privado.
