Reefs at Risk in the Western Pacific

About 50 percent of the coral reefs in the Pacific region are at risk from local threats (i.e., coastal development, overfishing/destructive fishing, marine-based pollution, and/or watershed-based pollution), with about 20 percent at high or very high threat. Most of the threatened reefs in the region are associated with large islands and areas of higher population, concentrated in Melanesia, but also in Hawaii, Samoa, and the Society Islands (of French Polynesia).
