MEDIA ADVISORY: “Sustainable Transport Saves Lives” Roundtable Discussion

Global transportation experts convene in New Delhi on Saturday, December 4, 2010

EMBARQ, the World Resources Institute’s Center for Sustainable Transport and Shell Foundation are hosting a roundtable discussion to focus on actions and policies to better develop and finance high-quality, sustainable transportation.

In India, 120,000 people died from road traffic incidents in 2008. Globally, road traffic crashes kill 1.2 million people and injure up to 50 million people each year, according to the World Health Organization. Road traffic injuries are projected to be the fifth leading cause of death globally by 2030. Part of the problem is the explosive growth in the number of vehicles, exacerbated by high speeds and a lack of regulation, especially in developing countries. Children are the most at risk. These statistics present an urgent opportunity to make safety a priority in our urban transportation systems.

This discussion will focus on the challenges and solutions to ensure the safety and sustainability of transportation in India.

WHAT:

EMBARQ and Shell Foundation are hosting a roundtable discussion, “Sustainable Transport Saves Lives,” as a parallel event to the Urban Mobility India 2010 Conference & Expo.

EMBARQ will launch a new guidebook to help cities plan safe, efficient and sustainable public bus systems, “Bus Karo: A Guidebook on Planning & Operations.”
