About Aileen
Aileen Carrigan is a Senior Associate in EMBARQ’s Research & Practice group. She helps to advance sustainable urban transport research, project planning and implementation. Ms. Carrigan supports global research about bus rapid transit (BRT) system design, implementation, and performance. She leads the development and monitoring of EMBARQ’s key performance indicators to estimate the transport, environmental and public health impacts of our work. She currently guides research related to national transit investment programs, and bus fuels and vehicles.

Prior to joining EMBARQ, Ms. Carrigan worked as a transportation planner in Johannesburg, helping the city to design and implement a new BRT system. She focused on issues of station design; accessibility for people with disabilities; pedestrian signage; bus shelter design; and improving connections to the BRT for pedestrians and bicycles. Ms. Carrigan has also worked in various capacities with sustainable transportation organizations and consultants in Cape Town, San Francisco and Boston. She has prior experience with the design, production and repair of bicycles and wheelchairs in developing countries. Ms. Carrigan holds a master’s degree in urban planning from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University.
