About Brian
Brian T. Carney is Program Coordinator for the Markets and Enterprise Program. He is responsible for the financial and administrative oversight of the program and supports the team in their fundraising and publication efforts. He also convenes the Program Coordinator’s Roundtable and serves on a variety of WRI committees.

Brian has extensive experience as a non-profit manager and fundraiser. He has served as the chief financial officer for a variety of non-profit organizations, including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the Advocacy Institute and the Washington Project for the Arts. In addition, he served as the Grants Specialist for the City of Kalamazoo, MI, and the Director of Chapter and Professional Relations for the Educational Theatre Association (home of the International Thespian Society). Brian was also an Action Researcher for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s SmokeLess States Initiative and co-authored a manual on coalition development called Lifting the Smokescreen: Seven Stories from the Front Lines of Tobacco Control.
As an undergraduate, Brian attended the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a Bachelors of Arts in Urban Studies from the College of Arts and Science and a Bachelor of Economics in Management from the Wharton School. He also holds a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre, with a concentration in playwriting, from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale
Brian’s other area of expertise is theatre. A produced playwright and published author. Brian’s play “I Thee Wed: A Fantasia on Marriage – Gay, Straight and Otherwise” has been performed at several theatres around the country and was chosen to inaugurate the Fringe Festival at the Midwest Theatre Conference. Brian is also a freelance arts writer for the Washington Blade.
