- A STRATEGY to improve the efficiency of nitrogen use in farming must balance the importance of producing food with the need to protect the environment, a major conference has concluded.
- Gov. Martin O'Malley created a task force today to figure out how to curb pollution of the Chesapeake Bay from septic systems, saying he hoped the study would help overcome "fears" of the legislation he had introduced this year that would have banned major housing developments relying on them.
- Oxygenation brings dead sea bottoms to life. This creates the necessary conditions for the establishment of new ecosystems that enable nature itself to deal with eutrophication. By conducting pilot studies in two fjords in Sweden, researchers at the University of Gothenburg have demonstrated that pumping oxygen-rich surface water down to sea bottoms is effective. A large wind-driven pump is now to be tested in open water in the Baltic.
- A recent analysis by IKHMG found sedimentation and eutrophication - excessive nutrients in soil and water from runoff - are the biggest issues for the Kaipara Harbour, followed by declining fish stocks, biodiversity and the lack of coordinated, integrated management of the massive harbour.
- Spring is the time of year when the region’s Riverkeepers are particularly concerned about water quality and stream health. With the onset of strong seasonal rains comes the risk of sewer overflows from combined sewer systems throughout the Kansas City Metro area, and the result is increased pollution of our creeks, streams and rivers.
- FRESNO, Calif.—Farmers in California's agricultural heartland, which also is home to some of America's most contaminated aquifers, may soon have to start monitoring and cleaning up groundwater.
- South Africa - WHILE SA’s attention is fixed on acid mine drainage and its implications for the country’s water resources, eutrophication is quietly thriving in the background.
- Stockton, California - Over one hundred California environmental, commercial and recreational fishing, and environmental justice organizations have come together in support of “Clean Farms - Clean Water,” a campaign to demand that the Central Valley Water Board do its job of regulating the quality of water coming off of irrigated lands.
- UGANDA - THE increasing water pollution around Lake Victoria has affected the cost of production and hence the rise in water prices.
- If there is a jewel in Canberra's landscape it is undoubtedly Lake Burley Griffin. But while the lake's setting, especially in and around the Parliamentary Triangle, is pristine, the quality of its water is more akin to that found in an open drain. The lake is frequently closed to swimming and boating in the summer months because of outbreaks of blue-green algal bloom, and it has been subjected to a number of major inflows of untreated effluent from a sewage treatment plant in Queanbeyan. Indeed, older Canberrans may recall a number of coffins and corpses from the Queanbeyan cemetery were washed into Lake Burley Griffin after heavy flooding in 1974.
- Pakistan has drawn up a National Water Strategy to meet the millennium development goals (MDG) target before 2025 and has launched a scheme to provide clean drinking water for its people by the end of 2007. But the scheme, which was launched in September 2005, shows no positive results, due to bureaucratic internal fighting among the central ministries, the provinces and the local bodies, and is far behind its schedule.
- Despite the large number of rivers, the Ukraine is one of the most water deficit countries in Europe. Each year the rivers are becoming increasingly polluted.
- BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The program to reduce pollution between 2011 and 2015 will include emission targets for rural areas, Li Ganjie, vice-minister of environmental protection, said on Monday.
- Maryland requires cities and farms to keep a close eye on nutrient runoff in the Chesapeake Bay, but a study released Monday says the state doesn’t pay enough attention to another major source of bay pollution: you and your thick, green lawn.
- PE TOWN — The quality of SA’s water will continue to deteriorate rapidly unless urgent measures are put in place to manage it better, warns a new report released yesterday by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
- More than £7m of government money has been made available to farmers to help tackle the problem of water pollution.
- A federal study assessing how much farmers are doing to clean up the Chesapeake Bay credits them with making progress in reducing their pollution but says the vast majority need to do more to help the troubled estuary.

- DAGUPAN CITY, Pangasinan, Philippines—The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has asked the public to avoid gathering and eating shellfish gathered in the waters of Anda and Bolinao towns in western Pangasinan after they tested positive for the red tide toxin.
