Analytical Overview
The database was created by editing (to reflect country name differences) and linking a database on signatories to the Kyoto Protocol to an ESRI global country digital file (ESRI, 2002).

Map Description
This map depicts the countries that have ratified or signed the Kyoto Protocol as of June, 2003. Ratifying countries are indicated in green. Those countries that have signed, but not ratified the Kyoto Protocol are indicated in dotted yellow. Those countries that have neither signed nor ratified the agreement are depicted in red.

For those countries that ratify the Kyoto Protocol, the treaty will come into force when: (1) it is ratified by 55 countries which (2) represent 55 percent of the total carbon dioxide emissions from industrialized countries (at 1990 levels).
