VARIABLES

You are in the "Variables" section of the EarthTrends text site. This section contains information from a variety of data providers. The World Resources Institute synthesizes this information for our users. In addition to reproducing time-series data, we include in-depth technical and source notes for each variables. You will also find references or hyperlinks back to the original source for each variable.

The variables section provides the most detailed data sets on this site. Each variable can be downloaded into a comma-seperated value (CSV) spreadsheet which can be opened in Microsoft Excel, Quattro Pro or virtually any spreadsheet software. Most variables are available in time-series format and can be graphed or mapped to show change over time.

To access the data, click first on any one of the topic areas in the toolbar above and then select a variable from the list on that page. On each page, you will find links to "View Technical Notes" and "Download Data". The "View Technical Notes" link spawns an external window with a comprehensive overview of data collection methodology and reliability. The "Download Data" link will launch an external window which contains the CSV spreadsheet. To save this information to your hard drive, right click on the link and select "Save Target As . . ."

We welcome and value feedback from our users. If you find an error, have a suggestion, or would like to tell us how you are using EarthTrends information, send an email to earthtrends@wri.org
