Watersheds of the World - Population Density

Analytical Overview
A medium resolution global dataset, Gridded Population of the World (The Center for International Earth Science Information Network [CIESIN] 1995), was used to calculate population density. The dataset was compiled from the latest available census data at a variety of sub-national district levels, standardized to 1994. The total number of people in each basin was calculated using a 5-minute population count grid. Population density was calculated by dividing the total number of people in each watershed by the land area of each watershed.

Map Description
This map shows population density by basin, expressed as people per square kilometer. The most densely populated basins are found in India, China, and parts of Europe. In Africa, the most densely populated basin is Lake Victoria, a subbasin of the Nile watershed.
