With only one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World still in existence, the New 7 Wonders Foundation has been extensively campaigning for world citizens to vote on the New Seven Wonders of the World. The foundation was created in 2001 by Bernard Weber, whose mission is to protect humankind's heritage worldwide. To date, more than 50 million people have voted for the New Seven Wonders (N7W). On July 7 2007, the New Seven Wonders will be revealed at the Official Declaration ceremony to a live audience in Lisbon, Portugal.

The Candidates

In order for a structure to be considered for N7W it must meet certain criteria:

  • It must have been created since man's existence and before 2000 A.D.
  • It must be human-built
  • It must be in a state of acceptable preservation (ruins therefore do not qualify)
  • It must encompass artistic or architectural value
  • It must be universally recognizable
  • It must reflect and celebrate cultural and social diversity

At the end of 2005, 77 candidates had been chosen. The candidates have now been narrowed down to 21, including the Colosseum, the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China and the Statue of Liberty. Each candidate is assigned two attributes describing its symbolism. The Colosseum, joy and suffering; the Taj Mahal, love and passion; the Great Wall of China, persistence and perserverence; and the Statue of Liberty, generosity and hope. The New Seven Wonders Campaign

To enhance their campaign and reach out to more people, the N7W team toured the locations of all 21 candidates. The tour started in September 2006 in Athens with a hot air balloon flight over Acropolis to honor the ancient Greek city where the first Seven Wonders of the World were created. It ended in March 2007 at the Statue of Liberty in New York City. Celebrations were held at each stop to commerate the structure and to rally support for its hopeful admission into the New Seven Wonders of the World .
