Over 35 million volunteers from 122 countries are set to participate in this year's Clean Up the World Weekend, 15-17 September. The annual event, held in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is a community-based initiative seeking to inspire people everywhere to clean up and protect their local environments.
This weekend, around the globe, individuals, along with businesses, community groups, schools, and governments, will be participating in a variety of efforts to improve environmental health: trash removal from streets, waterways, and beaches; tree planting; energy and water conservation; and educational programs. Clean Up the World also supports these types of activities throughout the year.
"Clean Up the World mobilizes people around a powerful idea - taking the challenge of environment and sustainable development to our front doors, our backyards, and everywhere else around the globe."
--UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner
